April showers bring new inches on Mt Hood

We live in the Northwest. It rains in the spring time. It might be a little too wet in the city for some but the high level of precipitation is good for one thing: snow, and lots of it!

April brought spring snow to Mt. Hood. Windells Academy students were hyped to get a powder day on Friday; 9 new inches at Timberline Lodge. Timberline opened Palmer last Saturday for the first glacier laps of the summer season. Riding up Palmer Chairlift under blue skies and a flannel felt a little nostalgic, and our mood was suddenly overrun by uncontrollable excitement (and sheer terror) when we realized summer is a mere five weeks away… It’s going to be a good one!

Today should be another great day on Hood. (No surprise there!) Annual snowfall is on the upper end of 518″ and Hood’s new base is a saucy 169″. As the indigenous peoples of the great Northwest once believed, Sasquatch, a mythical creature native to Oregon’s rain forests, stands around 8′ tall. Therefore, our current base depth is roughly 2 and 1/3 Sasquatches high. Thanks, mystical Sasquatches, for allowing us to shred the Windells Private Park all summer long.

Kenworthy and Goepper top the podium at 4th annual Dumont Cup

Maine’s main event, the 4th annual Dumont Cup, went off at Sunday River Resort last weekend. Fifty one skiers gathered to compete for over $20,000 in prize money. The top spot went to Gus Kenworthy this year, a familiar face around Windells in the summer time. Windells Academy student, Nick Goepper, came in second, just two points behind Kenworthy’s 96.0. Last year, the two were switched; in 2011 Nick placed first at the Dumont Cup, one of the events that would propel his skiing career to a professional level. Nick has been competing and placing in just about all of the season’s major freeski events. Park City’s Joss Christianson placed 3rd. Joss is a familiar face around Windells and he’s spent plenty of time in the Private Park on hill. Alex Beaulieu-Marchand, also a student at Windells Academy, has had an incredibly successful season and placed 9th in the Dumont Cup.

Congratulations on the wins, guys! We’ll be seeing you around camp!

The best is out West: a spring storm hits Mt. Hood

A spring storm has hit the Northwest! Mt. Hood is getting an insane amount of snow this week. Snow really started falling yesterday and we don’t see any sign of it letting up. Meadows reported 25″+ in the last 24 hours and a total base of 169″. The evidence is in the snapshot of their picnic tables! Timberline is sitting pretty and prepped for a fantastic summer. We were happy to see this photo of the Palmer buried under the late winter snow pack. Timberline’s reported base depth of 198″ is above average!

Windells at the 30th annual Burton US Open

The Burton US Open Snowboarding Championships turned “29 again” this winter. Superhumans Elena Hight, Jamie Anderson, and former campers Shaun White and Louie Vito topped the podiums while common folk grazed for free stuff at the sponsor tents. Method Man and Redman played a concert for VIP Open goers and, as always, too much fun was had.

The Big Cheese: Spring Break session 1 with Justin Norman

Oregon’s own Justin Norman is joining us a guest pro for Spring Break session 1. Justin is a phenomenal snowboarder; his style is something else. He’s worked at camp for years and we were more than happy to invite him back to Windells for our first spring session. We caught up with Justin to pick his brain about the season, Japan, and Windells.

Windells Snowboard Camp breeds champions in Oslo

The WSF TTR World Snowboarding Championships in Oslo, Norway came to a close last Sunday. Two hundred and forty of the world’s best snowboarders gathered to compete in Slopestyle, Halfpipe and Quarterpipe. The World Champion podiums were packed with former Windells campers and Team members.

Windells familiar faces, Chas Guldemond and Spencer O’Brien, were dubbed Slopestyle World Champions after their impressive performances on the perfectly groomed course. Guldemond earned his $40,000 bounty with a frontside blunt 270 out, front board to 450 out, switch back 1260, back 1080, tailpress to back 180 and a huge cab 1260 to put the icing on the cake. Spencer’s run sent her to the top of the women’s Slopestyle podium accompanied by Jaime Anderson and Enni Rukajarvi. O’Brien was able to stump Anderson’s success streak with a front board, noseslide, back 540, switch back 540, 50-50, and a lofty front 720.

Louie Vito and Matt Ladley, contenders for the Men’s Halfpipe Championship title, have spent plenty of time at Camp. Windells camper and Burton team rider, Kelly Clark, made this her 15th consecutive Halfpipe win. Clark made her run look easy: frontside air, backside 540 mute, frontside 1080 mute, cab 720 mute, and frontside inverted 720.

Windells has given these world class athletes the opportunity to ride and train in the off season on world renown facilities. We’re proud to see the hard work of team members and campers pay off, clearly, in big ways. Want to get in on the action? Head to www.windells.com to see what Windells can do for you.
