This past weekend we got a chance to catch up with the Rome SDS crew for some premiers, some shenanigans, and of course, the Downtown Throwdown. Winter is in the air as the national tour for “The Shred Remains” comes to an end. Having traveled from coast to coast in a van they call home, it was nice for the team to get out and peruse the town, and even do a little guest judging and competing. The 6th Annual DTTD, set in Pioneer Square, attracted a mixed crowd of die hard fans and first time spectators. We joined LNP, Johnny Lazz, Marie France-Roy, Rusty Ockenden, John Cavan, Riley Nickerson, and Derrek Lever for a little taste of snowboarding in the Pacific Northwest.
Student Spotlight: Diva Helmy
This week at Windells Academy, we wanted to put one of our recent graduates, Diva Helmy, in the spotlight. Diva is living the life. As a freshman at the University of Vermont, she couldn’t be happier with her college decision. Diva took some time out of her busy schedule to catch up with us and share some of her hard earned wisdom.
Hot Dawgz & Other Things
This past Saturday, the 8th annual Hot Dawgz & Hand Rails awakened the snowboarding scene in Big Bear California. The sun was shining. The features were out of control. It was too good to be true. During Snowboarder Mag’s live webcast, riders Zak Hale and Melissa Evans said it was the best rail jam set up they had ever seen. Competitors and spectators would agree; Bear never fails to make each year better than the last.
Whether they made it to the finals or not, the riders on Saturday were all worthy of medals, trophies, and high fives. Windells snowboard coach, and all around stud, Dylan Dragotta was nothing short of amazing. Everyone was throwing down like they hadn’t missed a day of riding since April. Dylan Alito, who was flipping on and off every feature, was undoubtedly a crowd favorite. As well as our friends Nick Visconti, Dylan Thompson, Jamie Madrid, and Andrew Brewer. Those guys and gals have definitely been eating their Wheaties.
The lucky winners of HDHR walked away with some serious cash, and it was well deserved. For the ladies, local Bear rider Melissa Evans took home the grand prize of $1,000. For the gentlemen, Jesse Paul took 3rd, Brandon Hobush walked away with 2nd place, and Ryan Paul won it all taking 1st place and $10,000. Congrats to all the riders. It was definitely a tough day to be a judge.
You can check out Alito, Hobush, and all of the other Ammo team competitors below. Thanks to our friends at Thirtytwo for the recap. Happy watching everyone, if you weren’t hyped for the winter, you better be after this!
Burton Stands Sideways in Denver
Premier season is in full swing! Whether you are a skier, a snowboarder, or a skateboarder, premier season has something for everyone. The crowds, the parties, the overall feeling of being stoked, it’s too good to be true. Denver blew up last week with the world premier of the new film Standing Sideways. The whole Burton crew arrived in style for the first of many showings of this amazing movie.
It seemed like every other person in the audience had been an employee or a camper of Windells at one time! It was great to have such a huge presence in the packed house of the Ogden Theatre. The movie played and the building roared. Burton created an experience that left viewers wanting more and more! Every big air was unreal, every song was spot on, and the simplicity of the film was what viewers needed from a Burton production. They nailed it.
It’s safe to say that Standing Sideways will be talked about from coast to coast as the tour rolls on. Hopefully this film didn’t cause too much sick airness, but if so, everyone walked out of the theater with a free copy of the movie packaged in a barf bag for their convenience. How thoughtful Burton.
Check out the recap below of the world premier in Denver and make sure to catch the show when it comes to your town! Happy movie watching everyone.

Nick Goepper Visits Mount Snow Gromfest
Windells Academy student Nick Goepper visited Mount Snow this week to help out with the Skills Enhancement Camp, presented by Mount Snow, Windells Academy, and the Matterhorn Inn. Mount Snow’s Grom Fest was a huge success and Nick was there to give a helping hand. The event was sponsored by Dalbello Ski Boots, Marker, Smith Optics, and two of Nick Goepper’s own sponsors, Volkl and Under Armour. “It’s very cool to be able to inspire and give back. Nick looks so big, but he’s really not so much older than some of them!” said David Currier of Smith Optics. High fives all around to the Groms for flying down the mountain, Nick Goepper for giving some expert tips, and the sponsors for making the event a success!
