On The Road With Chase Weaver

There’s a whole lot of welding, grinding, painting, and moving going on behind the scenes this week as our Head Digger Chase Weaver gears up for another amazing summer on hill. Along with his talented and definitely memorable crew of diggers, this mad scientist uses a whole lot of metal and a whole lot of snow to bring his creations to life.  Chase was trucking along in the midnight hours this season, building parks at Mt. Bachelor and saying goodbye to his usual winter stomping grounds of Utah. One thing is for certain, this good hearted southern man has been busy. Let’s see what the North Carolina native has been up to all season long:

Six minutes with Saga Outerwear

Saga was born at Windells Camp in 2005. When Saga was just a young brand, it had one jacket line. Saga got along with the other kids, and it was well-liked amongst its peers. When Saga grew up a little, it decided to move away from home; to the snowy peaks of Salt Lake City, Utah. There, Saga would develop and mature and soon, all the ladies wanted Saga.

Windells has been the “incubator” to many of the top brands in the industry. Grenade, Bonfire Salomon, Skullcandy, Atmosphere and Saga sprouted their first knuckle hairs at Windells Camp. I had the chance to chat with Sean Harkins, a past Windells employee and now the Sales Distribution Manager at Saga Outerwear, while the guys were on campus. I caught Sean, Jordan Harper and Jeremiah Paquette in the middle of a fashion show in the Betty Rides cabin, but I don’t want to be the one to spill the beans. Sean and I chatted West Coast Session, Saga summer plans, and expansion.

Windells welcomes West Coast Session for another round

Mt. Hood is ready to welcome West Coast Session for another gathering of the most talented freestyle skiers in the game. 2012 marks the sixth West Coast Session. The most elite athletes were invited to ski with Windells, Amplid, Auviq, Buff and Vital Films at Timberline Lodge for the private photo and video session May 7th-10th. Hillcrest Sports is holding an on-hill barbecue on Sunday, May 6th for the public jam; a full day of contests and giveaways for all participants.

West Coast Session is exactly what the name implies; a session. “It’s different than a company shoot or a film session with lots of pressure. It’s a session and it’s fun,” said Windells Academy Head Ski Coach Jeff Curry. Last year, Curry worked on getting new sponsors for West Coast Session and this year he’s added Camtrol to the list. Curry skis for LINE, Full Tilt, Electric and Orage. [Read more...]

Snowy spring at Mount Hood

Thank you, Wayback Films, for the wintery video enjoyment!

It’s been a warm season for most of North America. Even in February, it was difficult to think snow when in most front yards and street corners, there was a complete absence of anything white and fluffy (except maybe you’re neighbor’s dog). This winter definitely felt like summer. I mean, in the Northeast in March there were some 80 degree days, and while walking around in shorts and tshirts is nice, it’s a little scary when you’re used to shredding at that time of year! But, while California, the Rockies, the Midwest and the East were all having below average winters, the Northwest was getting even more snow than in 2011. Why? Something to do with La Nina again this year, which is awesome!

So what does this mean? If you live outside the Northwest you enjoyed a winter devoid of shoveling off your car, which isn’t too bad, AND you can still get a snowboard or ski fix at Mount Hood this summer at Windells. The video above features some of our kitchen crew riding in March. Face shots for days! The snow is still coming down in Oregon, too, so while you enjoy the warm spring at home, we will have snow all summer to satisfy your shredding needs.

Meadows Installs New High Speed Lift

Just in time for Winter Camp, Mt. Hood Meadows is installing a new high speed quad at their main base area. The Stadium Char, now better known as Stadium Express, will give skiers and snowboarders easier access to the north side of the mountain, which means no more pushing and unstrapping to get over to Forest Park and Park Place!

Meadows has always been the go to mountain after a heavy snow storm. With the addition of another high speed quad, this means more powder runs for all of us as soon as the snow starts falling. Windells Winter Campers have the luxury of getting to know the terrain of Meadows, Timberline, and Ski Bowl all during one session. This year campers will be the first ones to try out the new Stadium Express lift as 2011 comes to an end. What can be better than skiing and snowboarding while you count down to 2012. Come celebrate the New Year with us at Windells this winter, and see the new Stadium Express lift for yourself!

Windells Coach Nicky Keefer Supports Slims

Windells ski coach Nicky Keefer is standing behind Saga Outerwear‘s movement of correctly fitting clothing. More specifically; pants. In today’s world, this may seem outlandish. Some believe that the taller the tee, the better the skier. But what if Nicky is right? What if the size of your outerwear is not directly correlated to your ability level? What if bigger is not always better? We asked Keefer some questions to get inside the head of a trendsetting young man.

Q: Keefer! How was your summer season at Windells?
A: Hellllloooo! It was tons of fun in the sun… It was nice to be on my skis all year instead of just the winter. And what better place to be on skis this summer than Windells great weather and great park thanks to Chase Weaver the park manager.

Q: You were a coach for a couple sessions. Any memorable camper moments?
A: Umm, definitely a few unforgettable ones. Probably one of the memorable moments is when my campers entered into the Saga Activities on hill which led to some classic puking. As gross as it is…I still think it’s hilarious.

Q: Where did you grow up riding as a little grom?
A: I grew up in Huntsville, Utah skiing resorts like Snowbasin (Snowbasin holds the last dew tour stop) and Powder Mountain. Huntsville is about an hour north of Salt Lake City and is a tiny farm town. Definitely an interesting place growing up; compared to my friends that I’ve met throughout the U.S. Utah is a little sheltered, but at the same time; the state is possibly little more safe to raise your kids.

Q: What styles did you rock back in the day? What was your outfit on hill?
A: Ohh man, I used to have the hardest time trying to figure out what style worked best for me. I definitely got called out for looking like a gaper at Park City whenever I got the chance to get over there, where the real park scene is. I would wear the classic outerwear that you would wear when you went out to play in the snow when you were real young. Just try to imagine suits beyond suits.

Saga Presents- The Slims from Saga outerwear on Vimeo.

Q: Slims are in. Do you think they are here to stay?
A: Well in other snow sports yes.. but for skiing I think it will take a little more time to be that much more of established sport. So skiing will have “ALL” the different variety of styles that may take place in snowboarding and skateboarding. Hopefully people will stop caring so much about what’s cool and what isn’t and start wearing what they like to wear. PERIOD! Plus ski boots are kinda weird with slim pants cause they are just oddly shaped boots. The new Saga Slims are the answer.

Q: Did any campers hate on your Slim style?
A: No hate, but some of them where all about gangster this and gangster that. Huge pants here and huge tall tees there. Some were into ‘em though.

Q: The tall tee craze…tell us what you think.
A: Well depends on how tall. If it’s a dress than noooo. But if it’s just a slightly larger shirt to hang out of your hoody or jacket than suuure.

Q: Thanks for taking the time to chat with us Keefer! Where can we find you this winter?
A: I’ll will be residing in Salt Lake City skiing Park City every chance I get! Also messing around in the rest of the Wasatch Mountain range filming for the new 4bi9 film. If you get a chance pick up our latest and greatest film “Begging for Change” at 4bi9media.com. Do it!

There you have it, directly from Nicky Keefer himself. The message of the day is: wear whatever you want! Whether you are rockin’ the Slims, or sagging your pants down low, we want you to be on hill with us! Go check out Saga Outerwear‘s entire winter collection and don’t forget to check out Nicky Keefer in 4Bi9′s new film “Begging for Change.”

Session 5 Snowboard Edit

What a summer it’s been. Seems to be flying by. Cam Pierce, Austen Sweetin, Eric Willett and Jonah Owen were here just to name a few. The park is as long as its ever been and we’re still taking full laps from the top of Palmer to the bottom of the Mile. What could be better…
