Team Takeover Thursday: Why are these snowboarders stoked for camp this summer??

The excitement of summer snowboard camp at Windells is an equal-opportunity kind of fun. It transcends age, gender, and location; whether you are a six year-old day camper learning to skate in the Concrete Jungle for the first time, a 45 year-old IT Specialist who spends vacation at Hood, snowboarding with like-minded adults, or a high school junior, who worked all winter at the local pizza joint to save up money to fly out for your favorite session–everyone counts down the days to their Windells session with equal anticipation.

The same goes for professional snowboarders, too. While they spend the winter traveling to exotic snowboarding destinations like Austria, Jackson Hole, and Japan (and everywhere in between), they also have a huge amount of excitement about spending time at Windells once summer hits. Besides the fact that these guys and girls drop into 100 foot jumps, massive double kinks with intimidating two story drops on one side, and can pretty much do any trick they want at the drop of a hat, they’re not that different than us, right? Well…at least at camp they can help us learn awesome, new tricks and it’s really cool to meet someone you’ve watched in videos and find out they’re as down to Earth as your next door neighbor. But, back to the important part, how stoked everyone is–camper, staff member, or Team Takeover rider–to come to Windells this summer.

We’re really lucky to have a group of the nicest, funnest, friendliest, and most talented snowboarders at camp each summer and the crew for 2012 is going to be great. For this edition of Team Takeover Thursday, here are a few reasons some of the Team Takeover crew can’t wait for Windells this summer.

Take me back Tuesday: movie premieres

There’s only a couple Take me back Tuesdays left before summer starts. Not only does that mean that we’re close to summer laps, skating in the Concrete Jungle, and hanging out with pro snowboarders, skiers, and skateboarders as they takeover camp, but it also means that we’re closer to another really exciting time of year–when new videos come out! On the road with Dylan Thompson – spring 2012

Our good friend, Dylan Thompson just checked in from the road and sent over a bunch of cool photos from his recent adventures. He’s been all over the place: snowboarding in Japan, surfing in California, supercross in Utah (watching, of course!), all the while logging clips for his movie part this year and having fun shredding at home at Park City. Here’s the low down from the man himself.

It was a rough year for snow in Utah.  Normally we spend a solid month or two filming around Salt Lake City and in the mountains. This year, the only chance to film was to go somewhere on a trip. When we were at home in Salt Lake, we spent a lot of time shredding park at Park City. Here is a front board on the stair set Cole Taylor shot with his iPhone.

Team Takeover Thursday: What IS a Team Takeover Session?

So, we’ve been throwing around the phrase “Team Takeover Sessions” a lot on the blog recently, and if you haven’t been to camp the last few summers since we started inviting pro riders to take over sessions, you may not be familiar with exactly what this means. Plus, Team Takeover is the brand spanking new title for these sessions for 2012.

So, we’ll start at the beginning. What is a Team Takeover Session? Well, a Team Takeover Session (you’re going to read this phrase a lot) happens every session at snowboard and ski camp during the summer. A group of pro snowboarders takes over snowboard camp for the week, while a group of pro skiers takes over ski camp. The riders arrive the same day as the campers and come to orientation to introduce themselves. Starting day 1 on hill, the fun really begins! [Read more...]

Take me back Tuesday: Technine Team Shoot Out autographs

During Session 7 last summer, the Technine Team was at camp, and while that is awesome in itself, things were even more exciting when the T9 crew rolled into camp, because they had just been named the winner’s of the 2011 Transworld Team Shoot Out. [Read more...]

Dylan Thompson full part from “Familia 2″

Our friends over at Technine and FODT Productions and MFM and Fam just released “Familia 2″ for download on iTunes, and to let everyone know, they posted Dylan Thompson’s full part on Transworld. Dylan’s got ridiculous style and a heavy bag of tricks and is one of our favorite people. He spends all summer hanging out at camp dropping hams. Check out his full part above and the feature on TransworldSnowboarding, and download “Familia 2″ on iTunes!

On the road with Dylan Thompson

Here at Windells, we’re lucky to be able to meet and hang out with some of the best snowboarders, skiers, and skateboarders in the world. Each summer, some amazing riders visit Mount Hood and spend time at camp, shredding the on hill park and skating the Concrete Jungle. Some of guys and girls that come to camp become good friends, and keep coming back year after year. But, what do these talented guys and gals do when summer is over? Well, we are stoked that some of the members of the Windells family are inviting us along for the ride this winter, by sending us updates of the adventures that go down while they’re traveling, filming, competing, shredding with their friends, and having tons of fun this winter.

Dylan Thompson is an Oregon local. Dylan’s from Hood River and has ridden at Windells for year. He’s always been a staple in the Windells park. The last two years, he has hosted a session at camp with the Technine Team and we’ve gotten to know this awesome guy even better. He is a little shy when you first meet him, but there’s nothing quiet about his ability on a snowboard. This year, Dylan completely annihilated the rail line in the park. You’ve probably seen some of the footage in our videos. In addition to his on hill skills, Dylan’s always down for fun at camp. He competed in the Second Annual Technine Doughnut Eating Challenge with the campers, consuming his weight in powdered sugar. Dylan’s awesome, so we wanted to see what he has been up to since camp ended. Judging by the photos of Dylan at premieres, contests, and with giant contest IOU checks in his hands, he’s been busy. Here’s the first installment of On the road…with Dylan Thompson. [Read more...]

Frontline Rail Jam 2011 Winner: Denis Leontyev

This last weekend held the 7th edition of the Frontline Rail Jam across the pond in Stockholm on October 1st. The setup was definitely a good one. A lot of stairs equals a lot of potential for painful bails. There were some pretty crazy moves going down, but in the end, it was Denis Leontyev who came out on top. This past summer, Denis graced us with his presence here at Windells Camp. If you have seen any of his riding, you know he has some next level rail skills.

Check out the footage of the Rail Jam here:

The Technine Doughnut Eating Challenge returns!

One of the best days of summer, the Second Annual Technine Doughnut Eating Challenege, went down in Session 7. Last year, the competition ended in a sugary storm, and this year, there were more doughnuts and more powdered sugar.

Technine team riders, Derek Dennison, Dylan Thompson, Andrew Brewer, and the T9 Prospects, Zander Blackmon, Ben Bilodeau, and Brady Larson hosted the event. Dylan event competed, almost getting all of the doughnuts down before the powdered sugar started flying. [Read more...]
