Team Takeover Thursday: Why are these snowboarders stoked for camp this summer??

The excitement of summer snowboard camp at Windells is an equal-opportunity kind of fun. It transcends age, gender, and location; whether you are a six year-old day camper learning to skate in the Concrete Jungle for the first time, a 45 year-old IT Specialist who spends vacation at Hood, snowboarding with like-minded adults, or a high school junior, who worked all winter at the local pizza joint to save up money to fly out for your favorite session–everyone counts down the days to their Windells session with equal anticipation.

The same goes for professional snowboarders, too. While they spend the winter traveling to exotic snowboarding destinations like Austria, Jackson Hole, and Japan (and everywhere in between), they also have a huge amount of excitement about spending time at Windells once summer hits. Besides the fact that these guys and girls drop into 100 foot jumps, massive double kinks with intimidating two story drops on one side, and can pretty much do any trick they want at the drop of a hat, they’re not that different than us, right? Well…at least at camp they can help us learn awesome, new tricks and it’s really cool to meet someone you’ve watched in videos and find out they’re as down to Earth as your next door neighbor. But, back to the important part, how stoked everyone is–camper, staff member, or Team Takeover rider–to come to Windells this summer.

We’re really lucky to have a group of the nicest, funnest, friendliest, and most talented snowboarders at camp each summer and the crew for 2012 is going to be great. For this edition of Team Takeover Thursday, here are a few reasons some of the Team Takeover crew can’t wait for Windells this summer.

The Windells vibe with Nick Visconti

Nick’s ear to ear smile peeked in the door before he did. After the grin strolled in some signature Nick Visconti tight pants, excited chatter and a couple friends. When Nick and I sat down to talk, I expected a quick interview about shenanigans lately, upcoming projects, and general stoke for summer at Windells. A couple minutes into our conversation, I realized we’d cover these topics, yeah, however, Nick has a huge heart and “general stoke” doesn’t even scratch the surface.

Angela Swain: Hey, Nick. Let’s hit the basics. How long have you been coming to camp?
Nick Visconti: Oh, gosh. For about 13 years now. I was a camper for five years and I coached for a couple years and I’ve been coming back with Stevie Bell, Curtis and J Rob for our Team Takeover for a few summers.

Wow, that’s quite the stint. What have you guys done with your Team Takeover Session in the past?
We try to make our session about the campers. Yeah, we’re here to have fun and hang out and enjoy summer on Mt. Hood, but we use our session as an outreach rather than an outlet for ourselves. We try to interact with the campers as much as possible and really give back to the community that supports us.

So, what initially struck you about Windells that made you a return camper and then decide to continue your involvement with camp?
I think it was camp life; it was so much more than just camp. Windells is a place that welcomes campers to a community and allows them to really connect with other snowboarders, both peers and professionals. I really became absorbed into the world of snowboarding during my time at camp. For most of these kids, snowboarding at their home mountain is recreational but when they’re here they really get a sense of the culture.

What’s one experience with a camper that really sticks out to you?
It’s hard to pick just one. Me and the guys are more intent on building relationships and making connections with the kids during our Takeover session, and to carry those out beyond their time at camp, too. Social media has made it easy for me to stay in touch with campers throughout the season and to share my love for snowboarding with them which is really cool.

Well, we’re all looking forward to Session 4 with The Reunion. What projects and things should we be on the lookout for?
ReCreation with Transworld was a big one; it’ll be out in March. We’ve been working on a Christian snowboard film called ANTHROPOLOGY with Nations Foundation, Dave Downing, Ryan Paul, Simon Chamberlain, Jordan Phillips and Director Joel Parker. Other than that, I’m just eager to come out for the summer and excited, as always, to hang out with some campers.

Nick rides for Arbor Snowboards and placed third in this year’s Winter XGames Street Jam. Like the vibe at Windells Camp? Get registered for your session at the”funnest” place on earth.

Curtis Woodman is coming to camp Session 4 for “The Reunion” Team Takeover Session!

Curtis and Arbor teammate, Nick Visconti, gave out an Arbor snowboard to the camper that helped clean up campus by picking up the most trash. Shredding green!

Curtis Woodman hosted a session at Windells for the first time last year and it was only a matter of days before he was a full-fledged member of the Windells family. This backcountry-powder-riding-maniac navigated the summer snow with ease, bringing his unique snowboarding style to whatever he rode, whether he was throwing down on the big jump, or finding unique transitions all over the park.

Curtis took over camp last summer Session 4 and he’s coming back in 2012 for The Reunion: all the bears are back for the same session and the same crew as last year. For his Team Takover Session, Curtis will be joined by Stevie Bell, Nick Visconti, and Jason Robinson, for one of the most energy-packed and exciting weeks of camp all summer. These four guys have the energy of 100 campers each–they never slow down! They ride all day, then play awesome games of bump, dodgeball, and SKATE all night. We can’t wait for Curtis to come back this summer, so we thought we would get a sneak peak into some of his favorite parts about Session 4 last year. Check it out and if you want to come to The Reunion, too, there’s still time to register! [Read more...]

Hot Dawgz & Other Things

This past Saturday, the 8th annual Hot Dawgz & Hand Rails awakened the snowboarding scene in Big Bear California. The sun was shining. The features were out of control. It was too good to be true. During Snowboarder Mag’s live webcast, riders Zak Hale and Melissa Evans said it was the best rail jam set up they had ever seen. Competitors and spectators would agree; Bear never fails to make each year better than the last.

Whether they made it to the finals or not, the riders on Saturday were all worthy of medals, trophies, and high fives. Windells snowboard coach, and all around stud, Dylan Dragotta was nothing short of amazing. Everyone was throwing down like they hadn’t missed a day of riding since April. Dylan Alito, who was flipping on and off every feature, was undoubtedly a crowd favorite. As well as our friends Nick Visconti, Dylan Thompson, Jamie Madrid, and Andrew Brewer. Those guys and gals have definitely been eating their Wheaties.

The lucky winners of HDHR walked away with some serious cash, and it was well deserved. For the ladies, local Bear rider Melissa Evans took home the grand prize of $1,000. For the gentlemen, Jesse Paul took 3rd, Brandon Hobush walked away with 2nd place, and Ryan Paul won it all taking 1st place and $10,000. Congrats to all the riders. It was definitely a tough day to be a judge.

You can check out Alito, Hobush, and all of the other Ammo team competitors below. Thanks to our friends at Thirtytwo for the recap. Happy watching everyone, if you weren’t hyped for the winter, you better be after this!

Fun on campus: Sessions 3, 4 & 5 Activities Video

The activities at Windells are endless, and for session 3, 4, and 5 it went off! From Stevie Bell Knockout, to the session end Dance Party, kids were busy with nothing but fun. Check out some of the stuff that went down on campus!

Session 4 Snowboard Recap

After minutes of deliberation, a panel of professionals have decided that this is a switch back seven nose. We’re not totally sure, but we’re going with that.

Throughout the ages, there have been many foursomes that have defined sensibilities, innovated trends, and affected generations. In the sixties, The Beatles revolutionized rock music. In the eighties, Dr. Peter Venkham and the other Ghostbusters saved a legion of citizens from getting slimed. Flash forward to 2011, and it’s a fair comparison to say that Nick Visconti, Curtis Woodman, Jason Robinson, and Stevie Bell combined their collective radness and gave campers at Windells the best summer snowboard experience they could ever want.

The group may seem, at first, to be an unexpected foursome, but during Session 4, their unique personalities and boarding styles combined seamlessly, creating a powerhouse of fun. From morning to night, the guys were all over the place, harnessing the same energy of a whole cabin of campers. Tons of park laps, hours and hours spent in the Concrete Jungle and BOB, backflip clinics on hill, powerslide contests off hill, Bonfire Pipe 2 Pipe, and the biggest, most intense, game of knock out you have ever seen (Stevie could probably play defense in the NBA). But don’t take it from us, here’s what the crew had to say. [Read more...]
