Favorite thing about Windells: The Concrete Jungle. Every day I look outside my office window, I remember why I’m learning to skateboard.

Favorite memory from camp: Watching all the counselors get pied in the face each session. I always made sure to hide on that day so I wouldn’t become a victim!

For those of you who don’t yet know about the Employee Scavenger Hunt, here’s the scoop:

Our employees are amazing. They come from all over the country to live life in Mt. Hood with Windells Camp. Once August starts to slip away, they all eventually have to go back to reality and back to their roots. As winter settles in, our employees are building parks, taking classes, teaching lessons, and just about everything you can think of to pass the time until summer rolls around.

This winter hibernation gives us a perfect opportunity for you guys at home, to find our staff members in their natural habitats! Yup, you guessed it, SCAVENGER HUNT! This Windells Camp blog installment called, “Who Are We? Where Are We?” will take place once a month all over the country. Each contest will spotlight one of your favorite Windells employees at home in their stomping grounds, and it is your job to find them, snap a photo, and win some swag! Sounds fun right? Well, yea, it is!

Six down, one to go, and still riding down to the parking lot. What a summer it’s been. Session 6 couldn’t have been any better. We had a ton of fun riding the park and sunny skies everyday.

The Surface team dropped in at Windells for skiing, skating, games, and even tie dying.

Windells Academy Teacher: Catherine Coulin

At an early age, Catherine began pursuing a career in education. Almost immediately after graduating high school in Detroit, Catherine worked as a teacher assistant at an elementary school on a Navajo Reservation in Leupp, Arizona. After some time in the desert, Catherine opted to travel to the mountains for snowboarding and work towards a Bachelor’s degree in Colorado. It was here that Catherine met her best friend, future husband and lifelong skate partner, Billy. Together, Billy and Catherine made a move to Hawaii where Catherine found her passion for skateboarding.

Hawaii is home to beautiful beaches, beautiful people and even skate parks. “It was in Hawaii that I developed my love for skate boarding” says Catherine. “In between studying and teaching I found myself at local skate parks. I’ve been hooked ever since”. During her 3 year stay in Hawaii, Catherine taught at a local school and graduated from Hawaii University with a degree in English literature and Writing. After graduating, traveling and skating in Hawaii, Catherine moved back to the main land with Billy where they landed themselves positions at the “funnest” and “smartest place on Earth”.

Between the two, Catherine and Billy create a “dream team” for the action sports community, contributing on multiple levels.   As a concrete builder and designer Billy has helped to make Windells “concrete jungle” one of the best skate parks in the country. As an Academy teacher, Catherine pushes student athletes to perform at their best in the classroom and skate parks during Academy skate trips. “Catherine is an awesome teacher. Not only is she awesome but she skates too!” says Michelle Lu, Academy senior. “It’s really neat that we have teachers who skate and ride with us.”
