Team Takeover Thursday: What IS a Team Takeover Session?

So, we’ve been throwing around the phrase “Team Takeover Sessions” a lot on the blog recently, and if you haven’t been to camp the last few summers since we started inviting pro riders to take over sessions, you may not be familiar with exactly what this means. Plus, Team Takeover is the brand spanking new title for these sessions for 2012.

So, we’ll start at the beginning. What is a Team Takeover Session? Well, a Team Takeover Session (you’re going to read this phrase a lot) happens every session at snowboard and ski camp during the summer. A group of pro snowboarders takes over snowboard camp for the week, while a group of pro skiers takes over ski camp. The riders arrive the same day as the campers and come to orientation to introduce themselves. Starting day 1 on hill, the fun really begins! [Read more...]

On The Road With Justin Fronius

Hailing from the twin cities, this midwest kid has been on everyone’s radar all season long. Justin Fronius, otherwise known as Froni, is one of our infamous diggers that calls Windells home in the summertime. For the other 9 months out of the year, he is working for the city and searching for the next perfect spot. If you didn’t already know, his effortless style is sure to drop your jaw. With snowboard in hand, Froni has been traveling the country shooting with the homies and destroying everything in his path. We hacked into Froni’s Instragram account to get a “behind the shred” look into his life on the road. Let’s see what the Minnesota native has been up to:

Curtis Woodman is coming to camp Session 4 for “The Reunion” Team Takeover Session!

Curtis and Arbor teammate, Nick Visconti, gave out an Arbor snowboard to the camper that helped clean up campus by picking up the most trash. Shredding green!

Curtis Woodman hosted a session at Windells for the first time last year and it was only a matter of days before he was a full-fledged member of the Windells family. This backcountry-powder-riding-maniac navigated the summer snow with ease, bringing his unique snowboarding style to whatever he rode, whether he was throwing down on the big jump, or finding unique transitions all over the park.

Curtis took over camp last summer Session 4 and he’s coming back in 2012 for The Reunion: all the bears are back for the same session and the same crew as last year. For his Team Takover Session, Curtis will be joined by Stevie Bell, Nick Visconti, and Jason Robinson, for one of the most energy-packed and exciting weeks of camp all summer. These four guys have the energy of 100 campers each–they never slow down! They ride all day, then play awesome games of bump, dodgeball, and SKATE all night. We can’t wait for Curtis to come back this summer, so we thought we would get a sneak peak into some of his favorite parts about Session 4 last year. Check it out and if you want to come to The Reunion, too, there’s still time to register! [Read more...]

April showers bring new inches on Mt Hood

We live in the Northwest. It rains in the spring time. It might be a little too wet in the city for some but the high level of precipitation is good for one thing: snow, and lots of it!

April brought spring snow to Mt. Hood. Windells Academy students were hyped to get a powder day on Friday; 9 new inches at Timberline Lodge. Timberline opened Palmer last Saturday for the first glacier laps of the summer season. Riding up Palmer Chairlift under blue skies and a flannel felt a little nostalgic, and our mood was suddenly overrun by uncontrollable excitement (and sheer terror) when we realized summer is a mere five weeks away… It’s going to be a good one!

Today should be another great day on Hood. (No surprise there!) Annual snowfall is on the upper end of 518″ and Hood’s new base is a saucy 169″. As the indigenous peoples of the great Northwest once believed, Sasquatch, a mythical creature native to Oregon’s rain forests, stands around 8′ tall. Therefore, our current base depth is roughly 2 and 1/3 Sasquatches high. Thanks, mystical Sasquatches, for allowing us to shred the Windells Private Park all summer long.

Snowboard Coach Dylan Dragotta featured on HCSC’s video contest!

Dylan Dragotta is one of our favorite people out there. Dylan, who’s been really busy this year filming for Keep the Change’s new movie, hails from the great state of New Hampshire and first came to Windells a few years ago as an adult camper, when he won a session in a snowboard contest in Vermont. Since then, he has come to Mount Hood every summer and began coaching at camp last year. He’s really friendly, an awesome snowboard coach, and is next level at skating. With how rad Dylan is, it’s no surprise that he’s pretty well-liked and we were excited to see him featured in High Cascade’s Guess Hood video contest on snowboardermag.com. Yeah, we’re pretty stoked that Dylan is one of our staffers. D.Dragotta is pretty dang bossy!

#Windells through your eyes

It’s week two of #Windells and our friends have added a ton of awesome photos using the tags #Windells2012 and #funnestplaceonearth. Keep ‘em coming! Here are some of our favorites and a few from Windells staffers. [Read more...]

On The Road With Mary Rand

This week we had a chance to catch up with Yawgoon, Loonatic, and snowboard coach Mary Rand. For those of you who don’t know, Mary is on another level. She throws down with the best of them, making the East Coast and all lady rippers proud. Fresh out of Alaska, Mary took some time to fill  us in on her adventures as she traveled from coast to coast and back again.

Seven Springs teaser “Evaporate”

Seven Springs is a mountain in western Pennsylvania that has been making waves in the snowboard world over the past few years. Under the direction Of Joel Rerko, along with the dedication of a talented park crew, Springs has become the number 1 resort for park on the East Coast and a must-go for many pro riders. The Forum Snowboards team has held photo and video shoots there, much of which can be seen in their recent team videos. It’s not often an East Coast mountain gets this much love and Seven Springs definitely deserves it!

We love Seven Springs, too, because a ton of our awesome Windells family call the resort home. Head Counselor Jamison rides there, and former (and fantastic) staff members still hang out/work/shred there (Jeremy, Keri, Jordan, Chuck, Chris, AJ…the list goes on). It’s a pretty rad resort–did you see Forum’s The Streets set up they built this year?! Team Take Over Riders Cam Pierce, Stevie Bell, Nic Sauve, Austen Sweetin, and Niko Cioffi all traveled to Springs in January to hit the humungous street set up.

With all the love we have for this resort and the folks that ride it, we couldn’t have been more stoked when the teaser for Seven Spring’s 2012 season movie, “Evaporate” was released. Check out the trailer above. We can’t wait to watch it!

Snowy spring at Mount Hood

Thank you, Wayback Films, for the wintery video enjoyment!

It’s been a warm season for most of North America. Even in February, it was difficult to think snow when in most front yards and street corners, there was a complete absence of anything white and fluffy (except maybe you’re neighbor’s dog). This winter definitely felt like summer. I mean, in the Northeast in March there were some 80 degree days, and while walking around in shorts and tshirts is nice, it’s a little scary when you’re used to shredding at that time of year! But, while California, the Rockies, the Midwest and the East were all having below average winters, the Northwest was getting even more snow than in 2011. Why? Something to do with La Nina again this year, which is awesome!

So what does this mean? If you live outside the Northwest you enjoyed a winter devoid of shoveling off your car, which isn’t too bad, AND you can still get a snowboard or ski fix at Mount Hood this summer at Windells. The video above features some of our kitchen crew riding in March. Face shots for days! The snow is still coming down in Oregon, too, so while you enjoy the warm spring at home, we will have snow all summer to satisfy your shredding needs.
