There’s pretty much one thing we like about warmer temperatures, green grass, and the sight of more and more people breaking out shorts and sandals with each passing day–summer is on its way. Right now we are only month until we are riding up the Palmer lift to check out what the Diggers have built for the first session and piling into vans to head out to skateparks all over the Northwest. We’re more than a little excited. While outside many windows spring has sprung, we’re daydreaming about the quarterpipe from Session 6 last summer. [Read more...]
April showers bring new inches on Mt Hood
We live in the Northwest. It rains in the spring time. It might be a little too wet in the city for some but the high level of precipitation is good for one thing: snow, and lots of it!
April brought spring snow to Mt. Hood. Windells Academy students were hyped to get a powder day on Friday; 9 new inches at Timberline Lodge. Timberline opened Palmer last Saturday for the first glacier laps of the summer season. Riding up Palmer Chairlift under blue skies and a flannel felt a little nostalgic, and our mood was suddenly overrun by uncontrollable excitement (and sheer terror) when we realized summer is a mere five weeks away… It’s going to be a good one!

Today should be another great day on Hood. (No surprise there!) Annual snowfall is on the upper end of 518″ and Hood’s new base is a saucy 169″. As the indigenous peoples of the great Northwest once believed, Sasquatch, a mythical creature native to Oregon’s rain forests, stands around 8′ tall. Therefore, our current base depth is roughly 2 and 1/3 Sasquatches high. Thanks, mystical Sasquatches, for allowing us to shred the Windells Private Park all summer long.

Team Takeover Thursday: Surface

The trees are blooming, the bugs are buzzing, and it sure does feel like summer is on the way. Now, obviously we are excited for the warm weather and loads of sunshine, but most importantly we are counting down the days until the Surface team takes over campus! The crew is gearing up for another amazing summer of bluebird laps and tie-dye mayhem. After checking in with the team, it’s safe to say that these guys will be turning camp upside down and delivering the goods during Session 4. Don’t forget to comment and answer the question at the bottom of this post for a chance to win some serious swag!

Snowy spring at Mount Hood
Thank you, Wayback Films, for the wintery video enjoyment!
It’s been a warm season for most of North America. Even in February, it was difficult to think snow when in most front yards and street corners, there was a complete absence of anything white and fluffy (except maybe you’re neighbor’s dog). This winter definitely felt like summer. I mean, in the Northeast in March there were some 80 degree days, and while walking around in shorts and tshirts is nice, it’s a little scary when you’re used to shredding at that time of year! But, while California, the Rockies, the Midwest and the East were all having below average winters, the Northwest was getting even more snow than in 2011. Why? Something to do with La Nina again this year, which is awesome!
So what does this mean? If you live outside the Northwest you enjoyed a winter devoid of shoveling off your car, which isn’t too bad, AND you can still get a snowboard or ski fix at Mount Hood this summer at Windells. The video above features some of our kitchen crew riding in March. Face shots for days! The snow is still coming down in Oregon, too, so while you enjoy the warm spring at home, we will have snow all summer to satisfy your shredding needs.

New series, new contest: introducing ‘Team Take Over Thursdays’

Here’s a question for you. If a pound of feathers and a pound of bricks are dropped from a balcony at the same time, which will fall faster? Don’t know? Don’t care? Sounds like summer is just around the corner! Six weeks until you can trade your pencils and notebooks for sunscreen and airbags. Until then, we’ve got you covered.
“Team Take Over Thursdays” is a new blog series that highlights our ski and snowboard lineup for Summer 2012. We’re taking an in-depth look at who and what is in store as another summer approaches the start gate. Get stoked! This year is going to be bigger, better, and “funner” than ever.
#Windells: instagram and camp from your perspective

p: evergreenskateparks
Over the past year, Instagram has infiltrated our daily lives. Pictures, comments, likes, followers–we’re not complaining, it’s one of our not-so-guilty pleasures to scroll through our feed and see what cool things our friends take photos of every day. Besides being a very good way to pass the time while waiting in line at the grocery store, Instagram is a interesting look at what others find interesting enough to capture and share with their followers. Maybe it’s that athropology 101 class from freshman year creeping up on us, but we think it’s pretty cool to look at what others take a second to save and share. [Read more...]
Take me back Tuesday: taking the Neff bus to the mountain
Ok, exciting newsflash: Session 1 of summer 2012 is only seven weeks away.
Ok, that may seem like a long ways away, but it’s not. That’s less than two months. Less than a quarter of school. Barely time between vacations at work. Not even enough time to earn significant interest on your savings account. It’s not even a whole season of “How I Met Your Mother.” (People still watch that, right?) [Read more...]
