Salomon's Scotty Arnold with a backside grab here at Windells.
Headed to the mini West Linn skatepark with the session 5 skate campers (those kids rule) earlier this week and met a former Windells camper. He was all hyped on the new concrete park and skating with the kids. He gave me the heads up to a link on the ESPN Snowboarding blog where some of the Videograss and Salomon crew gave an overview of the “Best Day Ever” which involved skating the new concrete park here at Windells.
Each session at Windells Camp we get a huge variety of levels of skiers and snowboarders that fit into different groups with coaches to help progress their skills on the mountain. Sometimes we’ll get beginning snowboarders who just want to learn to snowboard and that was the case for 16 year old Tatiana this week.
Tatiana arrived at Windells Camp from Latin America with the goal of learning how to snowboard and had only been on snow once before in her life. With the help of Head Coach Danger Dave, she learned to turn earlier this week and by the end of the week was hitting the beginner park features.
Every day at camp, we have events and contests on hill for campers to participate in if they want. Rome puts on a Game of SHRED, Burton has a Spin to Win contest and Atmosphere does a different jib contest each session…and there are even more! This session, Jace from the kitchen put on a High Ollie contest on the first day on hill, to help campers get warmed up on their snowboards for a week of summer shredding, and he gave away a ton of Candy Grind gloves, too! Jace put together this video so you can see just a little of the fun that we have on hill every day. Click here to check it out on youtube.
Each session at Windells we enjoy the company of the adult campers who stay at the adult house, experience the campus activities at the main campus, ski/snowboard the mountain and hang out with the adult host K-mart who makes sure the adult campers are happy all week. Adult campers get to enjoy dinners, nights out on the town and spend their on-snow time learning with other adult campers. Today the flat box in the Windells private park was popular with the adult snowboard group and 18 year old adult camper Devon from Massachusetts was mastering his tricks in front of coach Moss.
Session 5 has been a progression session as campers each day are stepping up their skills in our private park at Timberline. Coach Ashley has been keeping the skier girls hitting the slopes hard to dial in their tricks. In her group we found 17 year old KC from New Jersey who set out to accomplish tricks at camp and has been mastering them left and right.
