Contest Nonsense…

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

The Cricket Wireless Campus Rail Jam Tour took place this past weekend in Downtown Portland.  Snow was hauled in from Mt. Hood and 3 rails were shredded in front of 3000+ that were in attendance.  The contest was started by a college organization who wanted to get experience putting on marketing programs and a national tour.  It blossomed into a strong following and an entire west coast tour visiting 14 colleges in seven states.  By ridaz for ridaz!!!

Staffer Kyle Martola took his strong contest skills with him into the finals and ended up taking a very respectable second place.  It paid out $500 cash and a whole slew of prizes including a new snowboard.  Congratulations kyle, way to put on for Oregon and Wisconsin.

Amazing skater and absolute beast Josh Bishop ended up taking first place at the event.  That’s right, Windells took the top two positions at the finals.  Josh is the kind of kid that doesn’t let contests go to his head so the first thing he did when he got back to camp was go straight to work in the Kitchen.  Hard work and determination will get you anywhere, bring your work ethic with you to Windells and only good things can happen.  See you this summer!!!

Checking in with MFM and FODT

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Marc Frank, Travis Kennedy and crew are still hanging out at camp, enjoying grub from the awesome Windells kitchen staff and hanging out on campus in the afternoons when it’s not as hot out. We checked in with MFM today to see what they’ve been up to so far.

Says Marc Frank, “we came to Windells ’cause this is the dopest spot by far with all the concrete, all the skating….The whole vibe down here is dope and the people that work here are dope. I’ve known Tim Windell for a long time and he always hooks it up and shows love to us and we show love back and it’s all like family over here, so it’s cool.”

MFM continued, saying, “we got here and rode a little park just to kinda get warmed up to the different kind of corn/slush snow. The first two days we’ve just been scoping and hanging out, kinda skating and playing basketball. Tomorrow we’ll really start working.  We’ve scoped out a couple of things to build, so we’re going to go build ‘em and film ‘em.”

Girls having fun!

If you haven’t heard yet, summer is officially here and Windells is pulling out all the stops in preparation for the first session on June 6th. Here at camp, it’s really fun to ride with the boys, but we also understands that hanging out with a group of ladies can be super fun as well. With this in mind, Windells offers a myriad of girls-specific activities, so you can maximize your fun during your stay at the funnest place on Earth!

Tons of the best female professional snowboarders have spent time at Windells, as both campers and coaches. Gretchen Bleiler, Kelly Clark, Hannah Teter, Molly Aguirre, Tara Dakides, Clair Bidez, Alexis Waite, Hana Beaman…the list goes on and on of women who have benefited from sessions at Windells, gaining confidence and skills on the mountain as well as having fun and making friends back at camp.

On hill, you can ride and ski with both guys and girls, or if you’d prefer a lady-only group (girl shredding can be awesome!), you can sign up for that and get your shred on with like-minded females. It’s good to have choices and Windells makes sure your covered however you’re most comfortable.

After you come down from the hill, there are tons of activities at camp to take part in. All of them are open to you, but in addition what the guys are doing, there’s girls-only things to do, too! Traditional camp activities like arts and crafts, volleyball and dodgeball run every afternoon. You can also drop in on yoga classes led by Senior Counselor Keri, go thrifting at shops in Portland, learn to knit your own signature beanies, or make t-shirts with Betty Rides.

Want to brush up on your skating? You can thrash the bowls in BOB or fine tune your skills on the new cement set up in the middle of campus with the ladies’ progression skate clinics that are held every day, with levels for beginners all the way up to experienced skaters. If you have never skated or bmx’d before, but you want to learn, Windells has got you covered, too. The Demo Lab has a bunch of bikes and skateboards you can use to learn how to push around, drop in and land your first ollie or bunny hop.

The Demo Lab also has a ton of next season’s snowboards, boots, bindings and skis to try out that are women-specific. There’s brand new gear from companies like Rome, Salomon, Ride and Burton and with the help of the Demo staff you can try out tons of gear to fit your every need, from riding rails to getting out of the pipe. There’s women’s reverse camber boards this year, too!

After a long day of shredding at the mountain, making tshirts, playing dodgeball and skating around campus, relaxation is key. Lodging is totally girl-friendly with female counselors and all-girl cabins sponsored by brands like Betty Rides.

Windells really is the funnest place on Earth and everyone here is committed to making sure your time at camp is the best part of your summer. The sun’s out, the snow is soft and everyone is stoked—get out here!! Click here for session dates and prices.

To the office…

The back office has been graced with a mural featuring the characters of Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax.”  It includes swaying Truffula Trees with several Lorax sprinkled throughout.  It was created by our artists Roam Steve and Enzo who did the whole thing free hand.  The back side of the Office is now in progress and will have a different theme which is being kept secret.   If you have not read the book or watched the movie, “The Lorax” is a great book about industrialization and conserving nature.  Being nestled in the foothills at Windells makes you conscious of your surroundings, just looking at the stars at night is enough to spark creativity.  Don’t take my word for it, sign up for Windells summer camps and find out for yourself.  It’s free if your willing to work for it!!!!

Marc Frank Montoya just got into camp last night, the first of many pros who will be hanging out this summer. He’s in town with fellow FOTD shreds, Travis Kennedy and Kareem El Rafie and FODT filmer Drew Satin, getting shots for their new film and checking out the skate set up at camp. “Windells hooked it up again and it gets sicker every year. I feel like I’m 12 again,” said MFM. Travis agreed, “we’re all happy to be here once again and to try out the new skate stuff. We’re out here filming for our new movie, MFM Productions/Finger on da Trigger’s Hard to Earn.”

Check back tomorrow for more from MFM, Travis, Kareem and Drew.

Win a Scholarship to Windells!!!!!!

There is still time to enter Tim Windells writing contest to win a free session at the funnest place on earth.   The criteria is a 1-3 page essay explaining why you deserve a scholarship to Windells.  He wants creativity, honesty, and personality.  We also need it EMAILED, not posted in the comments to tim@windells.com

We here at Windells understand that writing might not be as strong as your bs lip, so we have decided to give you a cheat outline of a good looking essay.  All you need to do is throw together a few sentences about yourself, plug them into the outline, read it out loud one time to make sure it sounds smooth, and email it to Tim Windell.  Here we go:

This is how to start the introduction paragraph.  Think of 2 good reasons why you should be at camp. (Examples are: who you are, what you do, how you support a scene, why your sport is important. How you’re a better person from action sports.) Don’t get too detailed, save that for the paragraphs to follow.  The last sentence should say, in general, why camp needs you and you need camp.

The second paragraph will talk about one of the points you mentioned in the introduction paragraph.  In this paragraph you will openly state your first point as to why you deserve a scholarship to camp.  Now explain your statement and be detailed.  The final sentence should sum up your first point.

The Third paragraph will be your second point as to why you deserve the scholarship.  Again, bluntly state your reason for deserving the free week, and then go into points that support your opening statement.   Be very specific and give examples, or life stories to support your cause.  The final sentence should sum up the second point.

The final paragraph should wrap up your whole essay.  State the two reasons, again, why you should get the scholarship.  Wrap up with how you being at camp will benefit both the camp, as well as yourself.   The last sentence should leave Tim Windell with something to remember you by.

Be witty, clever, and creative.  Even if you are not a good writer this outline should help you started.  Anything submitted will be read and considered.  We are not looking for the best grammar or punctuation, but looking for someone who can really benefit from this rare opportunity.  You don’t even have to follow this outline, it is just here for people who need it.  Remember, the deadline is MIDNIGHT July 6!!!
Good luck and happy writing…

Still gearing up for summer…

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

The scenery on Windells’ campus continues to change every day in preparation for camp and things are getting out of hand in a rad way. The staff has been working hard every day, but luckily everyone’s still been finding some time to test out the new skate and bmx features. The new set ups are ridiculous.

Things are beginning to shape up here in the last few weeks before camp.  These are some spy photos of how awesome camp will be this year.  Epic is the word my friends.  This is the volleyball pit behind the vert ramp.  All ready for sessions.

p5272443

Like we stated earlier, the BMX trails are shaping up nicely.  The beginner stuff is done, and the “Man” lines are being built as we speak.  A new head builder flew in today and things will be out of hand by the first day of camps.

p5272449

I can’t really talk about this, and in fact I promised people I would not post about it, but this is just 1/4 of a project that is completed and ready to be ridden in this summer.  Once camp starts I’ll post pictures but just wait until you see this obstacle in person, I call this the toll bridge and there is a gap into and out of it that will separate the men from boys. Windells is geared up for anything you can throw at it…

Windells staffer Kyle Martola has been on a rampage lately.  The first week he moved to camp from Wisconsin he won Ski Bowl’s Super Slam Rail Jam.  Two weeks later he followed up the win with a second place finish at the Cricket Wireless Campus Rail Jam.  It was held on the OSU campus and he helped build the course and then killed it in the late rounds.  He is now qualified to ride in the finals which take place in Downtown Portland on May 30th.  Good luck Kyle, Windells is rooting for you!!!!
